Meg + Joe

A laid-back engagement session with friends in Detroit. Top it off with coney dogs, puppies, and Joe’s classic Bel Air, and you’ve got yourself some magic.

Lisa + Frank

Lisa + Frank are such a special, dynamic couple that I’m so honored to know. So much has happened since these photos were taken in their apartment in July of 2017, all of which have been incredible and I’ve been lucky enough to have photographed every step of the way so far. From the wedding last August (on the Journal soon), to the opening of Shewolf (their new restaurant in Midtown Detroit with Chef Anthony Lombardo), to the baby they’re getting ready to welcome any week now; it just keeps getting better.

Laid-back at-home sessions, they’re simply the best.

Amanda + Ryan

I've known Ryan since he was born (read: cousins); and we were the best of buds growing up (even across state lines in Michigan and Illinois). Then we grew up, and I got to watch him meet and grow and love Amanda. I took both of their senior photos, we took turns visiting each other, we shared meals in Chicago and Detroit. Work and life took them to Seattle and we miss them dearly (but makes for a pretty incredible place to have an excuse to visit).

There's so much history here, so much love, so many stories to tell. Instead, I'll just leave you with the images to tell the tale of their love, and the picture-perfect PNW magic when I traveled to Seattle this past Spring to document them.

And a few bonus iPhone shots from the rest of Cali and I's PNW adventures surrounding their session (Seattle, Bainbridge Island, Vancouver, Squamish, Whistler, and everywhere along the way).

Carlie + Kevin

On this spring-like day (that's probably a major tease), all I'm doing is thinking back on this perfect October evening with Carlie + Kevin exploring the shorelines of Lake Michigan and the magic of M22. Those days where the water is still warm from the summer sun, most of the tourists have gone home, and the views are plentiful. Those are the days.

Drew + Missy

When you find those clients that you just "click" with on every freaking level, you pretty much just shoot the crap out of them until you've used every last drop of sunlight the day has to offer. Drew + Missy are that couple, and I'm so insanely glad to know them.

Nicole + Eric

What in the world took me so long to blog this one?! A couple of months back I had the honor of flying out to join Nicole + Eric, not just in their home; but in their neighborhood, at their favorite brunch spot, and their favorite donut shop.

It's shoots like this that are the reason why I always push my clients to pick locations and ideas for their engagement sessions that aren't just a pretty place. Let's shoot somewhere that means something to you, that defines who you are, that signifies where you're at in this very point in your life. Nicole and Eric get married back home in Michigan later this year, but Brooklyn is home right now, and it couldn't have been more perfect to join them (and their ridiculous smiles) right in that very spot.

Kelsey + Jake

It started with pizza and beers in the living room, in the middle we trekked through 250 acres of family land in a truck, and at the end we ran around an active sand pit. Kelsey and Jake are the epitome of love, and cool, and joy and I'm so stoked for their wedding in Northern Michigan to roll around in just a couple of months. It doesn't get better than this.

Jordan + Monica

It's kind of the best when you get to know two of the best people in the world for years and years. Then you get to watch them fall in love, fall out of love and go on their own adventures, and then fall in love all over again and head toward marriage. Monica + Jordan's love is the kind of love that is so incredibly real and fun and makes you not be able to wipe a stupid grin off of your face when you're around them.

While I'm crazy bummed I was already booked for their wedding day, I'm just honored I could play a small part in the process. Meet the lovebirds below.

Kristina + Robb

You know, just one of those typical love stories that involves the shoe designer falling in love with the industrial designer and moving to Portland to do PNW stuff but returning to Michigan for your engagement photos on Belle Isle and your wedding at Cranbrook. One of those stories. I like those stories, and I like Kristina + Robb.

Doug + Stacy

When your good friend, who has been the backbone of your photobooth company since its inception re-finds the love of his life (for the umpteenth time), and finally puts a ring on it; you celebrate. You take pictures, you gallivant Detroit, and you laugh your faces off for hours. Doug + Stacy are special kind of people, my kind of people and I can't even wait for this wedding day to roll around.

Becca + Kevin

A quiet fall evening on the campus of the University of Michigan, spent with two new friends. It was sunny, their smiles were so real and so constant; it was just about as perfect as it gets. Becca and Kevin are the real deal, and I'm so stoked I get to be a part of their big day this year.

Taryn + Sam

TSE_01.jpg

What do you get when you throw two car designers together that are ridiculously in love? You get Taryn and Sam. You get their fabulous Mid Century Home in Detroit with all of the details of a Dwell spread. You get a secret BMW 2002 hiding in the garage that I make them bring out (it's still a bit of a project car). You get chasing the sunset and runs through the city we all love so much. This is what dreams are made of, and why this job continues to push me and inspire me day in and day out. This is what it's all about. They get married on Belle Isle in just a couple of weeks, and I couldn't be more excited.

Ferdinand + Courtney

This is just your friendly reminder that the snowy crap is only 16 weeks away. But really, sorry for taking you guys back to the winter on this cloudy July day, but I couldn't pass up the chance to show these two, especially this week of all weeks. Ferdinand is my best friend to end all best friends. The kid walked up to me in my neighborhood (9 houses down from me) in the summer before 3rd grade and just very proudly said "Hi, I'm Ferdinand!" (me thinking this was a complete made up name proved to be incorrect). Needless to say, we were inseparable from that point on. Basketball, Camping, Lego's, a short stint as a band called "Miner in Possession" that created hot beats using Garage Band; we did it all. Obviously, the years have gone on, we've gone to college, we've started our jobs, I got married and had a kid before just about any of our other friends even considered seriously dating; but he's remained that one, awesome constant in my life. The friend I'm so thankful that has known me through every single step of the way. This weekend, he finally gets to marry the love of his life. Something I'm so grateful that he has found. Courtney is his perfect match and his incredible companion. Their personalities play off of each other so well, and the happiness they share just pours out of these images. Unfortunately, due to the life of a wedding photographer that has to plan his life a year in advance or more, I won't be in attendance for the big day. It's a bummer, and I'll be missing them both so much that day; but I also know that there's so much more in this life and our friendship than that one day. This is just the beginning for them. It's an event and a celebration, for sure. But it's just one day out of the thousands of others we've already shared, and will share in the future. They've got a whole marriage ahead of them, a beautiful journey, and I just can't wait to walk through the rest of the foreseeable future with Ferdinand and Courtney right there with us.

Teri + Josh

TJE_01.jpg

Teri and Josh. I've known them for what seems like forever. I finally get to see them come together and start this new adventure together this summer. Last fall we wandered Detroit for a few hours and just took it all in. The architecture, the sunset, the art, the people, the streetscapes. As the legendary Marvin Gaye once said: "Detroit turned out to be heaven."

Time-traveling back a few months to mid-April when the sunsets were just starting to get ridiculously gorgeous, but the sunlight still had that cold winter feel to it. Angelo, Jamie, and myself explored all over Detroit on that beautiful evening to create these images. I hope you enjoy as much as I did.

Carlie + Chris

They met over art. They fell in love. The rest is history. Carlie and Chris are some of the coolest, most down-to-earth while being extremely talented humans I've gotten the chance to meet and call friends. The day before their incredible Detroit wedding day, they invited me to their incredible home in Royal Oak to document a day in the life. Lunch, lounging, snuggles with Peanut the dog, it was all there. If you think they're the sweetest in these photos, wait until you see the wedding day.

Sometimes, visiting a new town with old friends is all you need to make an engagement session the very best it can be. Meet Tommy + Katelin. They're so awesomely in love, and photographing them was the easiest thing in the world.

Katie + Scott

A few weeks back I got to do an engagement session a little differently. Cut out all of the location scouting, all of the walking around towns or buildings or fields or rivers. Cut it all back to just the love. To making breakfast and drinking coffee and building forts in the living room (and sweating profusely because the A/C chose that day to stop working). Katie and Scott are two of my new favorite humans on earth. Their love is infectious, and their care for others is inspiring. Just a couple weeks after I photographed them in their apartment, I got to photograph their wedding surrounded by only the very most important people in their lives. That'll be hitting this blog before you know it, you better believe it.
