Detroit Family Photographer

The Economy Family

The coolest of families photographed on a perfect fall day in Indian Village, Detroit. The style and the laughs and the love flowing between all three of them is all you can ever hope and dream. Enjoy just a small snippet of a day in the life of the Economy Family.

The Johnson Family

I don't have much to say about this one. The only words I can muster are just some semblance of how incredibly special it is to be invited into a family's everyday. The mundane, the chaotic, the breakfast, the running around in your underwear. The love flowing from their little house is tangible, and it is real, and you can see it on all of their faces. It was just a Wednesday morning in their world, but it's a day I won't soon forget.

The Louis Family

This family. My family. Every year or so we finally get around to getting together to snap some pictures (not that we're not together multiples times per week, every week), and it obviously gets crazier by the year as one or the other of us add another kid to the mix. At any rate, these are memories and times in our lives we won't soon forget. So I present you with the Louis Family (+ cameos by Henry) on this beautiful summer evening.

The Morrice Family

MFB_01.jpg

Marty, Sabrina, and baby Harlow. The sweetest little family in the cutest little flat in North Corktown, Detroit. I loved photographing these three in their home so, so much. There's a certain peace and serenity that surrounds a home in those first few days after a baby comes. It's a chance (in between the eating and sleeping and pooping) to just sit back and take it all in. To count your blessings and see how much life has changed. I'm just honored I got to be there for a few minutes of it.

The Kids

TOY_01.jpg

I setup a makeshift studio in my living room a couple weeks back to photograph my twin nieces, their older sister, and my little guy in honor of the twins first birthday. This is what ensued.

The Woodbeck's

WFB_01.jpg

Goodness, this sweet little family means so much to me. A couple of years back I had the pleasure of shooting Jessica + Justin's Engagement Session and Wedding. I've since been honored to call them friends, and now got a chance to document their ever-growing, perfect little clan. That's what this job is all about.

The LaTarte Family

Gosh, it was so great to get to meet and hang out with the LaTarte family. I like to do family sessions a bit differently. I'm not all about the matching outfits in a random field somewhere. I want to document your family in a way that is real, in a way that is you. Whether this is in your home or at a different location, let's just do life together for a couple of hours. I got to meet Lauren, Brad and little Dean at their amazing home in Royal Oak and just go through a bit of the morning routine. Feedings, Nursery snuggles, and cuddling with their pup. After that, we hit the zoo! Lauren and Brad got married a few years ago at the Detroit Zoo, so it still holds a special place in their heart, especially now that they've got a baby to share it with.

LaTarte's; thank you for inviting me into your life for just a few hours. You guys are such a rad little family.

This Summer

Summer of 2014. It was everything. It came and went like I've never seen a summer go before, but it was also one of the very best I've ever experienced. One that I won't ever forget. Early summer saw some absolutely amazing weddings hit the books. Ones I'll be sharing on this blog over the next few months. During those weddings, Cali's due date was fast approaching, which brought a bit of stress, finding backup shooters should she go into labor, etc. All was well when on a beautiful July Wednesday (with no wedding the following weekend), Henry Thomas came into our lives in most perfect fashion. Everyone says it, but our lives won't ever be the same. He brings so much joy, happiness, and fullness to our life together and we can't imagine the time before him. Cali is an absolute saint for all that she went through in that pregnancy and labor, and I continue to fall even more in love with her strength and ability to fall into this role as a Mom, every single day.

One of our greatest desires for this new life is to continue to travel. To continue to experience. And to take Henry there every chance we can. We want to build a sense of wonder into him, even at a young age. To always keep him dreaming and creating and longing to see more of this world's beauty. In just the exactly 11 weeks since he has joined us, we've attempted to do just that. Day trips and family outings, being dedicated at our church and hanging with friends. Turns out in the final weeks of summer I ended up having three weddings in a row in Northern Michigan, which allowed us to rent a little cottage on Grand Traverse Bay, and not leave Michigan's paradise for three whole weeks. It was one of the best things we've ever done as a couple, and certainly the best as a family. Though I was working during the week and shooting weddings on the weekend, the slow-paced time so close to so many natural wonders allowed us to see and do so much. To swim, to climb dunes, to explore everything that Traverse City, the Leelanau Peninsula, Charlevoix, Petoskey, Mackinac Island, St. Ignace, and the lower Upper Peninsula had to offer. We even got to have multiple family members and friends come up and join us for days at a time, which was perfect.

In the next 30 days, Henry will get to see Chicago and New Orleans. He won't remember a bit of it, but we don't care. Having this new little family unit with me every chance I get is one of the coolest, and greatest things I could imagine.

All this to say, whether you're a single person, a couple, a family of 10, young or old: get out there. Do something. Explore your surroundings and see it in a new light. It's good for the soul, and you'll find so many things you never knew existed. I promise, you won't regret it.

The Louis' at Home

There's a certain serenity; a calmness that comes with photographing a family in their own home. A chance to stop, for even a moment within the chaos of every day life to celebrate that very life; that very gift you're living. If you remember their shoot from a couple months back, you'll notice that the world just got a little bit more wild for Meg + Chris. Every day is a new adventure, a new exploration into how to best do this life together. I'm just thankful that Cali and I get to be there to celebrate, experience, and grow with them every step of the way.

The Immerfall Family

Yesterday I finally got to photograph this little section of the Immerfall family, and boy, did it mean so much to me. The laughter, the joy, and the love that just oozes from Eric, Sarah, and their two little guys is more than you could ever possibly imagine. Over the years I've had the chance to photograph weddings of two of Eric's siblings, new babies as they came, and I even valet parked for Eric and Sarah's wedding a few years back. The Immerfall's (every last one of them) are some of the greatest, most genuine people I know and being invited in to tell another beautiful story in their lives is an absolute honor. All that to say; meet Sarah, Eric, Foster, and Quinn. The most fashionable little family you ever did see. Shot yesterday at Sarah's grandparents house, and blogged today (because I just couldn't stand it). Enjoy!

Meg + Chris + Emma + Two

See that cute tiny chick with the awesome teeth below? That's my sweet little niece, Emma. We decided to take the last 30 minutes of sunlight the other night to celebrate her first year of life, and the impending arrival of her TWO sisters in the coming weeks. This little family means so much to me, and it has been so awesome to see Meg and Chris become such stellar parents over the last 14 months. Their world is about to change big time, and we're just excited to be along for the ride with them. Sorry I'm not sorry for the cuteness overload you're about to experience.

The Therrien Family

My beautiful wife has some absolutely awesome family that lives up in the Montreal area of Québec, Canada and they generally get into this neck of the woods a time or two per year. Luckily, this time around Lisa made sure I could take some photos while they were here, so I got to spend an evening hanging with her, and her two boys. She left one boy at home (her husband) to build(!!!) a new house within the 6 months or so he's taken off. Talk about a ridiculously amazing accomplishment. All that to say, this family is incredible and I'm so glad to know all of them, I couldn't think of a better way to spend a beautiful Summer evening.

2012 :: YEAR IN REVIEW

Twenty-Twelve. Holy Crap. How do I even begin to describe it? The sheer amount of life change I got to experience in front of my lens is just jaw-dropping. In 2012 I:

Got married. Fell even deeper in love with my incredible wife Cali, I'd be nothing without her as my support system. Moved out of my parents house. Photographed people all around Michigan, Chicago, Nashville, Kentucky and more. Traveled out of the country for the first time. (Canada doesn't count) Launched MammothBooth! Got to welcome an incredible new niece and nephew into the world. Documented the weddings, engagements, families, seniors, and businesses of people that I genuinely care for, love, and am better off for knowing. Got an even deeper sense of the indescribable impact that a single photo can have on aforementioned people. Trespassed. A lot.

There was early mornings and long nights. There was times of extreme joy and times of unbearable stress. But these 194 images below are the reason why I continue to come back for more year after year. These aren't the most technically "correct" or "perfect" images I've ever taken. They won't necessarily have people knocking down my door to take photos of them. But they are my year in a nutshell. Each tells a story to me. The people, the places, the moments. Thank you so much to everyone that continually trusts me, believes in me, and allows me the honor of capturing these incredible moments. These images are my Twenty-Twelve.

Huge amounts of high-fives to Bryan, Abbey, Jakob, and Nick for locking down the second-shooter spots for me at some of these weddings as well. So much love for those talented people.

To Twenty-Thirteen. Let's make some memories together.

The Easter + April Sale!!!

Ladies and Gentleman, we've seen the warm weather and the spring. It's coming, we just know it. It's time to dust off those shorts, skirts, and sunglasses and get ready for some Spring and Summer fun. I for one am tired of sitting inside on my computer all day this winter. It's time to get out, play at the park, run and splash in the creek, and GET YOUR FAMILY SHOT. Uhh...that didn't come out right. What I mean is, I really want to take some pictures of you. If you're a family that wants some rad images of your whole little crew, or even just some photos of your little one outside the bounds of a studio that cycles you in like a herd of cattle, let's do this! Let's hit your favorite park, your backyard, or even bake up something fun in your home. I want to capture your family in their element, enjoying each other's company. Laughing, playing, jumping, running, LIVING.

Because I'm so excited to get back out there and take advantage of that warm, sunny weather that is surely coming down the pipeline, I've decided to offer a deal to anyone that books a shoot for anytime in 2012. Family + Children shoots are going to be offered for this limited time for $175.00 (usually $250.00), and includes a disk of your final, edited images. That means a ton of stunning shots of your family or kids, for you to cherish, share, and love for years to come. You have to act quickly though, you only have through the month of April to book your shoot with me, so let's do it!

I'm so excited to meet your family and little guys and gals. Let's make some fun frames together. Use the contact page for questions, or to set something up! Also, if you're on Facebook, make sure to like JDG Photo here, and share this post so your friends can get in on the action :)
